Past Continuous 

The past continuous is a tense describes actions that were being made at a time in the past refereed to and then continued, for example:

Yesterday he was studying English. Ayer el estaba estudiando ingles.

( comenzó a estudiar antes de ese momento y continuo estudiando posteriormente)

Jhon was playing tennis at 10 a.m. Jhon estuvo jugando tenis a las 10 a.m 

(comenzó a jugar tenis antes de las 10 a.m y continuo haciéndole después)

The past continuous is constructed with  verb auxiliary  "To Be" in its form and main verb in the infinitive with ING termination:

Note that the negative particle is constructed by placing NOT after the verb TO BE may also be used the contracted form WASN'T o WEREN'T.

You can also use this tense to describe two actions that happened in the past and one of them has already been completed. We use the Simple Past to mention what has been completed and the Past Continuous to tell what is still running.

When I left, he was studying the lesson.

cuando yo parti, el estaba estudiando la lecciòn.

They were singing when I broke the window.

Ellos estaban cantando cuando yo rompì la ventana.

Example:

1. The children were playing football during the week.

    Los chicos estuvieron jugando fútbol durante la semana.

2. Aide was driving when the accident happened.

   Aide estaba conduciendo cuando ocurrió un accidente.

3. Araidaly was teaching language for ten hours.

    Araidaly estuvo ensañando idiomas por diez días.

4. Alejo was climbing the mountain for three days.
    Alejo estuvo escalando la montaña por tres días.

5. My mother was preparing the dinner when Cristian got home.
    Mi madre estaba preparando la cena cuando Cristian llegó a casa.

6. Santiago Cruz was singing beautiful during the concert.
    Santiago Cruz estaba cantando hermosamente durante el concierto.
